About Culinary Camp

IMG_1536Saint Louis University’s Gardens to Tables Culinary Camp is a week-long program engaging campers in gardening, cooking and nutrition activities.  Campers prepare a variety of meals and work with professional chefs, registered dietitians, and master gardeners to learn principles of good nutrition, gardening and a healthy lifestyle. The camps are designed for children 7-12 with a special Teen’s Only Week (June 20-24) and an exciting new Junior-Chef Week for children 5-8 (July 11-15).

Campers journey to local farms, encountering first-hand sustainable local agriculture.  Each camp includes a Disability Awareness Day, helping campers learn what is involved when someone has a disability – how they adapt to cook and garden independently.

      Thank you for your interest in SLU’s Gardens to Tables Culinary Camp. The camp begins at 8:00 am in our garden each day. We learn about where food comes from and how to grow produce. Then, we bake from 9:30 until 11, learn nutrition education and have craft time until noon, lunch from 12-1, physical activity from 1-1:30, cooking from 1:30 until 4, and then pick up between 4 and 5 while finishing crafts and watching Alton Brown or a similar cooking show. Each day may differ slightly, but this is pretty much the format for the camp.

  1. My son has always wanted to be a dietician. He is 17 do you think this would be a good experience for him next summer?

    1. Hello Tamela,
      Sorry for the delayed response – this program would be a really great opportunity for him as the camp is run through the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics and we hire counselors from our department, as well as from Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy. We start the camp in the garden, teaching where food comes from. Then we prepare the fresh produce in our recipes each day. Nutrition education and physical activity are also emphasized in this program. We do have 1 week for teens in specific, so that might be the best week for him. Otherwise, he can help out with the younger kids if he would like. Let us know if you have any other questions!

  2. Hi, there! I heard great things from friends who send their kids last year; are there dates/registration info yet for 2013 summer?

  3. How strict are you with the ages of kids? I have a 9 yr old and 6 year old and would like to keep them in camp together. Is htat possible?

  4. Hi, Can you tell me if the teen week camp has the same hours (8-4)? My daughter babysits and would likely need to come late/leave early some days. Would that be a problem?

    1. Hello Kristin,
      Every week has the same hours. If she needed to come late and leave early, that should not be a problem for most of the days. On Tuesdays, we go on a field trip in the morning, so that day might be a problem. All other days should be fine. Thanks!

    I am a SLU faculty member and have a niece who is interested in participating in this summer’s camp. I was wondering if she would qualify for the family member discount?

  6. I was curious if you ever thought of changing the page layout
    of your website? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
    But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better.
    Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or two images.
    Maybe you could space it out better?

      Thank you for your comment. We have the page mostly for parents to see pictures of what their kids are doing while in camp, so the major focus is actually pictures. But, we will definitely keep your comments in mind as we progress through this summer. Thanks again!

  7. Do you take volunteers from outside SLU? I’m a university student from Montreal, but I’d be in St. Louis all summer and would love to work with this program.
