Camp 2012

July 9, 2012

We are off to another exciting week of camp! This week we will be thinking ‘Outside of the Lunchbox’, and looking at what other kids around the world like to eat for lunch! It will also give us some creative ideas for next year’s school lunches to shake things up. But lets not think about school yet– it is still summer! And what better way to spend summer than outdoors! We began today in our garden with our resident gardeners Michelle and Marilyn. They taught us all about different gardening tools, techniques and what it means to be organic. We lent a helping hand weeding out a few garden beds and planting several types of potatoes- even purple ones!

After garden time, we ventured indoors to our cool kitchen labs. Today’s cuisine is Asian themed, so this morning we cooked some Asian Noodles with sesame sauce and cucumbers. We also prepared the sushi rice we will be using this afternoon to make some rolls ourselves. It is going to be a delicious day!

After lunch and a fun time playing capture the flag, we headed back inside to continue cooking!  The first thing on our plates was an asian chex mix.  Then we used the rice that we cooked earlier in the day and made a sushi roll with cucumber, avocado, and crab meat.  How delicious!  Melissa showed us the proper technique of sushi rolling.

Melissa is showing us how to use the bamboo mats to roll sushi!

After we learned how to roll sushi, each little chef got a chance to make their own roll!

It was so fun to make sushi!
Lilly is working hard to make her sushi!
Great work with that sushi!

Next, we made a fruit sushi roll-up.  Instead of seaweed, we used tortillas; instead of rice and crab, we used peanut butter, fruit, and yogurt.  Everyone loved making two different types of sushi!

The first step was to put the peanut butter on the tortilla so that it would stick together
For fruit, we used peaches, bananas, strawberries, and blueberries. Sweet!
Isaac is loving this sushi!
Denali did an awesome job putting the fruit in her sushi

Jonathan had a great time, and we can’t wait to taste the rolls he made and brought home.
    This looks so much fun…
